#796 – The Hedgehogs Say…

Hello and welcome to listen to what the hedgehogs want to say!! šŸ˜€ šŸ˜€

I had these cute lil hedgehogs from MFT for quite some time now, and it felt like using autumn colors on them was the perfect idea. So, I made two cards, with the exact same arrangement, but with little changes.

I used MFT Happy Hedgehogs and Verve Stamps Bountiful Harvest stamps. I actually wanted to test one of the cardstocks that I own, on which I usually do misted stamping for superb effects, with watercoloring. The results weren’t exactly what I expected, but my sis said she liked the soft tones, so I thought of using the piece (or rather, keeping the card I made) than not. And that’s the one you see on the right.

I made this other one as I wasn’t satisfied with the first one. The one on the right is made by watercoloring using distress inks – and even bright colors were significantly toned down by this card stock. And the one on the left using stamping with MFT Black hybrid ink, then coloring using Zig Brush pens.

Coming back to the card on the right. Once the cardstock had dried, I die cut it using MFT Stitched Mini Rectangles die, added a base of dark brown cardstock, then adhered it to a kraft cardbase that I had already stamped in plaid tones of orange, red and brown using the MFT Plaid Background Builders. The sentiment is heat embossed on the same dark brown cardstock, die cut using MFT Slanted Sentiment Strips, foam mounted on the panel.

For the card with the brighter tones, the sentiment comes from Ranger Letter It – Thank You stamp set. I used distress oxide inks to create the blend of colors in the background, on which I splattered some water. I fussy cut the hedgehogs and pumpkins and mounted them at different levels of dimension.

With these cards, I am joining the following challenges –

  1. Cuuteee! šŸ’• I love both cards, beautiful coloring. Maybe you can use the toning down property of the cardstock for good effect when you use it next. šŸ™‚

  2. Its amazing how much difference a cardstock can make to the finished design. I still haven’t found a watercolouring CS that I can buy locally and be really happy with, so the search continues!! I think both of your cards are amazing (as always) and those hedgehogs are so adorable. I’m so glad you shared them with us as their colours couldn’t be more perfect for the challenge photo. And always so happy to see you anyway at TIME OUT!

  3. I agree with your sister the one on right is one I loved a bit more ,the rawness I mean no finished and defined outlines make it more adorable ! I was drawn towards the left one too..the bright colors and great job not letting the cute hedgehogs get overpowered by the BG .Both the have turned out wonderful..radiating warmth of Autumn šŸ™‚

  4. These both look absolutely amazing. Two such different coloring styles and you nailed them both! Love the cute hedgehogs and the scenes you created. Perfect for fall and super cute too! Thanks for joining us at TIME OUT!

  6. Hmm… two and too cuties, but I think that my heart goes to the vibrant one. The difference between both cards is quite obvious (not judging)… Firstly, I thought that you had colored the images on the left card with copics on a different piece of cardstock :O.
I just purchased a really cheap Strathmore heavy weight watercolor pad and then I read a not-so-good review about it, by an artist and art teacher… I haven’t used it yet, but I guess it can always be used for card bases, right :)?

    • I never use Copics, cuz I don’t own them – so doubts about it!! And maybe you should give that paper a try – who knows, it might work for you, even if it didn’t for them. Sometimes, our expectations differ, so you never know! If nothing works, like you said, card bases it is!! šŸ˜‰

  7. Very cute fall cards, I love the colours you used and the hedgehogs. Thank you for sharing your card at Happy Little Stampers Challenge.
